It’s still free. Voss also states it doesn’t “phone home anywhere,” which is a privacy claim worth flagging as the maker’s assertion rather than an independently verified fact.
The framing matters. Voss describes it as “still just a fun little system monitor” — not a productivity suite, not a dashboard, not a monitoring platform. That modesty is accurate, and it’s also why the product is interesting. Most system monitors fail the same way: they’re either buried in an OS task manager you never open, or they’re a heavy desktop app you install once and forget. Putting the signal in the browser toolbar — the one surface you’re already staring at for eight hours — is a genuinely good design instinct.
Why the “pet” framing is not just cute
I’ve tested enough habit-forming interfaces to be skeptical of gamification, but there’s a real mechanism here. A number you glance at is a number you ignore. A creature that visibly slows down or speeds up creates a low-grade ambient awareness — you notice the change before you consciously read it. Voss’s statement is a claim, not a certification. The right posture is: read the permissions the extension requests at install time. If a system monitor asks for “read and change all your data on all websites,” that’s a red flag regardless of what the launch post says. If it asks for nothing beyond what it needs, that’s meaningful evidence. I’d rather teach that check than assert the product is safe.

Here’s where I pivot from reviewing a novelty extension to the operational point, because the underlying idea generalizes far beyond browser memory.
Your content calendar has a resource ceiling too

The heavier your media workflow, the more a live usage readout earns its toolbar space.
Where I think it falls short, and who shouldn’t bother
Let me be balanced, because a free novelty extension doesn’t need to be more than it is — and shouldn’t be sold as more than it is.
It’s browser-scoped, not system-scoped. MemoryPet watches your browser. If the thing eating your CPU is DaVinci Resolve, a Docker container, or a runaway background sync, the pet won’t see it. Tom Veber’s question in the launch thread — whether it tracks per-tab or only the browser total — is exactly the right question, and the launch post doesn’t answer it. That’s an open question, not a flaw I can confirm.
There’s no team or multi-machine story. For a solo creator, fine. For a social media team managing accounts across five machines, a per-browser mascot is not a monitoring solution. If you need actual fleet visibility, you’re looking at something like Datadog or a proper MDM, and MemoryPet is not in that conversation.
The moat is thin. Eight new pets and a tooltip are nice, but the feature surface is small and the differentiation is aesthetic. I’d bet the long-term value here is as a well-executed free utility rather than a business — and that’s fine, as long as you evaluate it as a utility.
Who it’s NOT for: anyone on a locked-down corporate machine where you can’t install extensions; anyone who genuinely doesn’t experience browser slowdown (if your workflow is mostly native apps, you’ll never look at it); and anyone who needs historical data or alerting, because a live badge is not a log.
Where the math breaks
The one thing that would make me stop using a tool like this is if the monitor itself becomes the load. An always-animating extension that redraws a mascot every frame is, by definition, consuming some CPU to tell you about your CPU. The animation-off toggle in 2.0 is the maker acknowledging exactly this tension, and it’s the right call — but it does mean the “fun” version and the “accurate” version are in mild conflict. If you’re benchmarking performance, turn the pet off first.
What I’d watch / test next
Concrete steps for this week, in order of effort:
- Install it and read the permissions first. Before you trust the privacy claim, look at what the extension requests. That five-second check tells you more than any launch post.
- Run it during your heaviest real session — not a synthetic test. Schedule a batch of posts across Facebook and Pinterest with your usual tab load, and watch whether the pet actually correlates with the lag you feel.
- Turn the animation off and use the badge for a week. This tells you whether the ambient signal changes your behavior at all, or whether you tune it out by day three. That’s the real test of the whole concept.
- Answer Tom Veber’s question yourself. Check whether the readout is per-tab or browser-total, because that determines whether it’s useful for diagnosing a specific runaway dashboard.
- Then apply the lesson, not the tool. Count your actual repurposing steps per piece of content. If you’re doing six platform variants per source asset, you have a resource ceiling too — and no mascot is going to tell you when you’ve hit it.
My honest verdict: MemoryPet is a well-made, free, small thing that solves a small problem elegantly. The reason I’m writing about it for social media operators isn’t the pet — it’s the design principle. Make the invisible limit visible, put it where the work happens, and let people turn off the animation when they need real numbers. That’s a better content-ops philosophy than most of the SaaS dashboards I’ve paid for.
