The first lesson is to treat permissions as a creative constraint. Every browser extension in the creator economy asks for broad site access, and we rarely question it. Where the math breaks

Screen Awesome is Chrome and Chromium only. No Firefox, no Safari. That alone rules it out for teams standardized on Safari or Firefox. The maker’s testing has been mostly on Windows, and the Mac report in the thread suggests cross-platform reliability is still open. If you are a Mac operator who relies on QuickTime or CleanShot X, this is not a drop-in replacement.

Local-only storage is a feature and a risk. Because everything is local, uninstalling the extension deletes your captures. There is no cloud backup, no sync, no account. If you record client deliverables with this tool and then switch machines or browsers without bulk-downloading first, you lose the work. The maker says it plainly: bulk-download first. That is a fine workflow for a solo creator, but it is risky for a team.

The “free forever” positioning is also a question. Nitin says there is no paid tier and he isn’t planning one. That is honest, but it means the product has no revenue path. Not disclosed, no roadmap, no open-source guarantee. I’d bet this remains a solo maker utility rather than a platform product. That’s fine, but it means you should treat it as a tool, not a dependency. If Chrome changes its extension API and the maker disappears, your workflow breaks.

Who should skip Screen Awesome for now

If your team lives in Loom for async video feedback, skip it. Loom is built for collaboration: comments, reactions, team workspaces, cloud storage. Screen Awesome is not a collaboration tool. It’s a capture utility.

If you are a Mac native user looking for a polished offline recorder, skip it until the Mac bug report is resolved. CleanShot X is still the better Mac choice for power users.

If you need to record across browsers or inside Safari, skip it. This is a Chrome and Chromium tool by design, and that limitation is not a bug — it’s a scope decision.

What I’d watch / test next

This week, I’d install Screen Awesome, verify the “Site access: none” line myself, and record one short walkthrough with auto-zoom enabled. Then I’d export the MP4 and see whether it drops cleanly into Premiere or straight into a draft upload on a social platform. That test takes ten minutes and tells you everything you need to know about the core value proposition.

I’d also watch whether Nitin publishes a manifest diff with the next release. If he does, that is the signal that the security positioning is more than a launch-day story. If he doesn’t, the “verifiable” claim starts to age poorly. And if you are a team lead, add a permissions audit to your own tool review process. Ask every software vendor you rely on: what does your extension access, and can you prove it?

Finally, I’d test the bulk-download workflow before you need it. Local-only tools are only safe if you have a backup habit. Do that now, while you have time — and before you uninstall anything.
